Imran Khan: Pakistan's Supreme Court rules arrest was illegal

Pakistan's Supreme Court has ruled that former  high minister Imran Khan's dramatic arrest on corruption charges this week was illegal.   The court ordered Mr Khan's immediate release. His  attorneys had argued that his detention from court demesne in Islamabad on Tuesday was unlawful.

At least 10 people have been killed and 2,000 arrested as violent  demurrers have swept the country since he was held.   Tuesday's arrest escalated growing pressures between him and the  service.   The opposition leader, ousted in a confidence vote in April last time, was brought to court on the orders of Pakistan's top judge.  " Your arrest was invalid so the whole process needs to be repealed," Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial told Mr Khan.

The former cricketer told the judges he would been abducted from the High Court and" hit with sticks".   Why was Imran Khan arrested?  Footage showed civil forces seizing Mr Khan, who was injured in a gun attack last time, and dragging him from inside court demesne, before whisking him down in an armoured vehicle.   His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf( PTI) party says the cases against him are politically motivated. The arrest  maddened his  sympathizers the  once 48 hours have seen  wide violence and rare attacks on state and military  installations.   Seven  elderly PTI leaders are among those arrested. They include former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who police say" incited violence".

In a statement Mr Qureshi denied this and  prompted  sympathizers to continue with peaceful  demurrers.   Mr Khan was ousted  lower than four times into his term as  high minister.   numerous judges believe Mr Khan's election palm in 2018  happed with the help of the  service. But since he was ousted, he has come one of the  service's most oral critics.   In November 2022, Mr Khan was shot in the leg while leading a  kick march. He has  indicted a  elderly intelligence  officers of carrying out the attack- which the  service has  explosively denied.
